AcroYoga with Chris Filkins

AcroYoga

I teach an adagio practice often called AcroYoga. I teach intermediate and advanced students in circus or solar machines, transitions, & poses. I lead the Westside Acro project originating out of the Original Muscle Beach which seeks to provide year round access to high levels of progressive training for students of the practice in Southern California. Many of the leading teachers from throughout the world have come to share their passions and skills with us at Westside Acro. I like to think the Los Angeles kula has been greatly strengthened by my tireless work.…

Garbha Pindasana

One of my greatest joys is finding ways to support those around me. Nicola is one of those. This young woman has had a huge effect on me since we met. Always a pleasure. Always very deep with her. She introduced me to Garbha Pindasana. I love it and wanted to lift her! #yoga #yogaeverydamnday #acroyoga #acro #play #playla #patience #playeveryday #rawmovement #strength #socalyogis #strikeapose #strengthproject #ashtanga #garbhapindasana…

Monkey Nut

Chantal Therrien & Chris Filkins share some of their collaboration from the spring of 2014. Chris & Chantal met, taught a class together featuring a handsfree 4 step, and then proceeded to spend at least 25 hours together creating, communicating, developing a friendship, and exploring some basic yoga and how it applies to each of their acro practices. Much of the footage was lost but remnants exist. All of this is a work in progress. We put together about 15 minutes of choreography but didn’t have much time to refine it. Sadly most of this material was lost due to a hard drive failure. Maybe someday all the pieces can be stitched back together again. Until then we have this. Hope you like!…

Westside Acro Presents Core Work

AcroYoga in Los Angeles

This week at Westside Acro we will be exploring the core. It’s the foundation of the experience and getting it awake, responsive, and prepared is part of the journey to becoming a successful practitioner. Exploring concepts from several different machines we will break down and assemble a set of excellent calibrations and exercises to put you and your partner on the way to greater ease and flow in your play.…

Standing on the Hip Bone

@orkah balances on my hip bone. I have been exploring this space for over a year with several different partners. Today was the first time I took the mounting foot away. This starts as a side star. Or is using his toe to dig into my psoas while the ball of his foot is resting on my iliac crest. It’s really an amazing feeling. When we hit it correctly it feels like an amazing psoas massage. It’s very intense the way a good massage is but not too intense. If we are off by any amount at all we either can’t hold the pose or I am in tremendous pain. But there is one spot where everything can be balanced and the fun begins. I first began exploring this with @eveinmotion several months ago and have learned more and more about it every time I explore it. Next our wonderful spotter @korandkarma will no longer be in the picture. Then one of my hand supports will go away and it will become a two point of contact pose. Wonder if it can become a simple toe point? Can a ballet dancer balance perfectly on the iliac crest? Can anyone? What a trip. I can’t believe I geek out on such stuff. What a crazy life I have created for myself. Today was such a great day! So much love! #deepmonkeystyle #omb #brachiator #pose #balletdancer #westsideacro #yoga #yogateacher #acro #acrolove #acroyoga…

Spinning Unicycle

Little thing I have been playing with lately with Leah. I call this bicycle spinner. Leah is the young lady I wrote Scorpion Heart with several years ago. We were separated for a good long time but starting to explore again with each other. So nice to have her back in my life. So emotional these types of partnerships get. I have been thinking a lot about this lately. Such a fascinating topic. How we bond with those whom which we partner. Been thinking a lot about how to speak about these things. I’m sure I will have something else to share on this soon as I never seem to shut up. 😜 #acrolove #acroyoga #deepmonkeystyle #westsideacro #acro #footjuggling…

Reverse Hollow Back on Hands

A year ago today I shared this pic of @moderntarzan Nicholas doing a beautiful reverse hollow back on hands with me. Since then Nicholas has become a worldwide phenomenon of awesome. He deserves it. Truly a sweet guy. His ideas about movement are to me some of the most interesting out there in a field of fascinating movers. I’m proud as can be of all he’s accomplished and will in the future. And as you can see from the photo here I’d like to think I supported him along the way. #gratitude #socalyoga #socalyogis #movement #yoga #balance #trust #strength #beast #power #acro #acrolove #acroyoga #pose #hollowbackhandstand #hollowback #handstand#whereiacro #calisthenics #power…

Inverted Pindasana

This one is very dangerous. Use a spot. This will fail directly onto the neck of the flyer and could result in paralysis if you do not take this pose seriously. Be warned. This is a neck balance. The flyer is being held and is lifting directly off of the C7. My hands are cupped and together like I am holding a liberty. This neck balance, a modified pindasana, comes from Ashtanga and is dope as can be. It’s a glorious pose to balance. Use a spot. Work this out very carefully. #deepmonkeystyle #ashtanga #play #yogaeverydamnday #yoga #yogateacher #acro #acroyoga #westsideacro #fitness #fitfam #fit #strength #socalyogis #strengthproject #trust #balance #beastmode #pindasana…

AcroLove Festival – AcroYoga in San Diego for the New Year

Really happy to share that the wonderful acrobat Emily Reuman & I will be teaching our particular brand of progressive AcroYoga at the next AcroLove festival in San Diego over the New Year in 2016. At the last AcroLove Festival we taught a group of 50+ monkeys how to do crocs with ease and strength and we had a great time, the students were so good and attentive, and the organizers of the event created such a wonderful vibe. Really looking forward to returning! Thanks to Lizzy Tomber, Adam Hiner, & Josh Young for having us back!…

Don't Be Stupid. Be Creative

AcroYoga in Los Angeles

Westside Acro is back yet again with another round of training on Friday night at Laughing Frog Yoga. This week Ashley Witham & Christopher Filkins will be exploring a machine designed for ballet dancers. But you don’t need to be a ballet dancer to do it! It’s a really fun and very fast spinning little piece of love which everyone will find great satisfaction in mastering. Our well designed set of calibrations will have you spinning fast and having a blast before the class is over.…
